Birdwatching in Tambopata

Peru is one of the two countries with the largest variety of bird species in the world.  Most of them live in the amazon regions, like Madre de Dios, which area is almost twice the size of Costa Rica and more than 60% of it is protected.
Birdwatchers come from all over the world to Tambopata, in Madre de Dios, to see the birds of the rainforest. This area hosts more than a thousand species, and it is possible to find more in a hectare than in the whole U.S.A. The best time of the day for birdwatching is dawn, when birds are mostly active. In the many ecosystems of the jungle live species like the harpy eagle, different kinds of macaws and other parrots, hoatzins, woodpeckers, swallows, falcons, toucans and hundreds more.
One of the most amazing spectacles of nature happens when parrots feed in the clay licks, where colors and sounds are protagonists. Birders must be patient and observe from a hiding place, if they don’t want to disturb the birds.
In Tambopata, there are also canopy towers to have a good view of the top of the rainforest and its wildlife. These towers are a great opportunity to watch birds from a better perspective.
For sure, Tambopata is one of the best places in the world for birdwatchers, who can also enjoy one of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystem on the planet. There are places even less than 30 minutes away from Puerto Maldonado, where it is possible to find a great variety of birds.
